Hope springs eternal when summer finally arrives. Visions of lush, colorful gardens fill our thoughts. Lazy afternoons spent lounging in the garden and sipping icy lemonade while enjoying a great summer read.

My garden studio is the perfect setting for creative relaxation. It’s been a work in progress for many years. As the years go by, I must adjust my expectations; low maintenance is part of that plan.

Plan before you shop

Flower prices continue to rise, and the season’s enjoyment seems shorter due to the heat. So in keeping with my P.I.T.G. motto, “Keep it simple, keep it kind,” I did just that this summer. I purchased five flats of marigolds and coleus covering both sun and shade. I also bought a few plants to keep my hummingbirds happy as well. Spending under $125.00 on plants, I kept it simple for me and kind to my wallet.

Gardening isn’t a competition

At the end of August, I finally found time to deadhead and feed my planters. They look pretty good. Their gorgeous orange and yellow colors will take me right into Autumn quite nicely. No need to buy mums this Fall. So, with some forethought and buying the right plants, perhaps there is such a thing as low- maintenance gardening.

I think I’ll get that lemonade and my book, enjoy the rest of summer,
